ROFLCon

So - ROFLCon! It was a fun time.

It was different from most comics conventions, probably because it wasn't a comic convention. It was an Internet Convention, and what that meant was a big focus on the panels and only a few tables with people selling stuff - I didn't bring anything to sell anyway! It was also unusual in that all these webcomics people were invited (Joey, Rich, Jeph, Jeff, and more!) but only me and Randall and the Cyanide and Happiness guys were on panels talking. I got the impression they did this with a lot of other niches too, so the overall experience was more of a peer-to-peer convention, where walking around you were bound to run into someone awesome.

It was pretty surreal. Jay Tron Guy Maynard was a big hit, and very easy to photograph. I didn't end up getting a chance to talk to him, but I did listen in on his panel, and I wanted to tell him how I respected how he took all the internet hate he got with his first costume and turned it into something pretty great. I also met MC Frontalot for the first time, and let me tell you, he's really fun to talk to: after listening to his voice for years, just having a conversation with him gave me this feeling of listening to a secret hidden MC Front track, where he's just, you know, shooting the breeze. Nice. I didn't get to talk to Matt but I wanted to tell him I like the way he's living his life.

Interesting panels for me were hearing the different perspectives on community and news between the Reddit team and Drew from Fark and the OC Remix guys. OC Remix is a video-game remix/cover site and it's been one I've been reading for five or so years, so it was a thrill to meet them and thank them for the Jazz Plumber Trio cover.

Here's a picture from the panel Randy and moot and I were on:

from Scott at Laughing Squid, who took some awesome pictures

WHO ARE THESE HANDSOME PARAGONS OF THE MALE FORM?? I was worried about the panel: moot and Randy have huge audiences, so I was touched when the moderator said "Here's Ryan North from Dinosaur Comics" and there was all this applause. I was honestly surprised to be that well-received! We all got tons of applause for just sitting on chairs up there, which was insanely flattering. Thanks, everyone! The talk was streamed but I don't know if it's available online anywhere after the fact. M-Maybe?

Anyway IN CONCLUSION it was fun and surreal and I'm really glad I was invited to go talk and be famoused for a weekend!

Your shoulder has nothing to say!

Surreal

"Surreal" was definitely the word to describe it.

I also really liked Tron Guy and Matt's conference. I also thought it was kind of ironic that their two philosophies were sort of contradictory--Jay was all like "I'm a geek and this is who I am!" and Matt was like "I was a geek until I got fed up with it and tried to do the least computery thing possible." It's funny because Matt's ambition is to go as far away from his computer as possible, whereas Jay's ambition is to go inside it.

I made this montage of ROFL Con:

I have a bunch of long videos of panelists talking, but I honestly feel like ROFL Con can only be conveyed via incoherent montage.

It was fun.

I also really enjoyed meeting Ryan North, and then later felt embarrassed about having such one-sided enjoyment for meeting a stranger? I fetishized the other : (

GREAT JOB Mike: Quack Quack I thoroughly enjoyed the Collin Classic this year. The start was incredibly organized, and the volunteers did a terrific job of letting me know where I needed to be and when.

I wouldn't really call what moot has an "audience"...

(And besides, you look by far the most dashing.)

I had firmly instructed my friend (also named Ryan and, strangely enough, also a paragon of the male physique!) to purchase everything that Dino Comics was selling, and he came home with nothing. But if nothing was all there was to purchase, then... uhm... I think it means I don't hate him? Heard it was awesome!

Jpgp> He also comes with a clunky, sci-fi name and a price tag resembling that of a luxury car. The silver, round-eyed SDR-4X humanoid robot was unveiled Tuesday and will go on sale later this year.

I think we have those same tables in the science building.

Oh, and I am loving the comical chalk-drawings in the background. Charming, to say the least!

I find it amusing that you are "Ryan North from Dinosaur Comics" as if Dinosaur Comics is some huge corporation that you just happen to work for. Or as if you are in the comic itself. You should consider yourself lucky, buddy, only the select are "from Dinosaur Comics".

That picture has been making the rounds hard for the last few days, here at this office full of geek girls. We've firmly divided into "Randall Munroe is hotter" and "Ryan North is hotter" camps. Friendships are dissolving over it; productivity is at a standstill. You two are amazing.

(We're all scared of 4chan. None of us chix0rs are in that camp.)

Let me just tell you ladies something. I, personally, am never going to give any of you up. I am never going to let you down. I am never going to run around and...desert you. I mean. Just so you know.

I must say, I kept up with ROFLCON from the plans on, and I think it's just way too awesome not to keep happening, especially with people like you there. I'm glad you had fun.

I think all that applause was probably actually just the buildup from people having gotten to read hundreds of hilarious comics by you, for free, over many months. I mean, sitting in a chair is pretty cool too.

Right before ROFLCON I was in this bar and I overheard a couple of guys talking about ROFLCON and I completely freaked out because um PEOPLE IN REAL LIFE ARE NOT SUPPOSED TO TALK ABOUT THE INTERNET! NOT OUT LOUD! Listen I met all my roommates on the Internet and we never talk about it out loud, that is just perverted. I mean seriously. Remember when John Waters said it was bad enough when you told your parents you were gay, tell them you're a bear also? Anyway I hope you had fun.

Something about Jay Maynard just seems so sweet and a little sad, like a Shel Silverstein book.

Um I can say to anyone of around my age "Hey do you know Ryan North?" and there's a decent chance they will say yes. Like, probably 1%. Which is pretty insane for a person who thinks they're not famous.

HOLY CRAP I JUST NOTICED I'M WEARING THE SAME T-SHIRT AS RYAN-NORTH-IN-THE-PHOTOGRAPH! It's so amazing it's making Randy Munroe's head explode.
