My New Favourite Band

I guess I'm a little slow to catch on sometimes, since they have been around for years, but holy, is Pink Martini ever good.

Here's a quicktime video of one of their songs! When watching, notice how both the song and the video are awesome. Here's what they have to say for themselves:

Somewhere between a 1930s Cuban dance orchestra, a classical chamber music ensemble, a Brasilian marching street band and Japanese film noir is the 12-piece Pink Martini.

Part language lesson, part Hollywood musical, the Portland, Oregon-based 'little orchestra' was created in 1994 in Portland, Oregon by Harvard graduate and classically trained pianist Thomas M. Lauderdale to play at political fundraisers for progressive causes such as civil rights, affordable housing, clean water, and public broadcasting. The group made its European debut at the Cannes Film Festival and in the years following went on to tour throughout Europe (including France, Spain, Portugal, Belgium, Switzerland and Monte Carlo), Greece, Turkey, Taiwan, Lebanon and the United States.

They're almost TOO perfect to even exist. They had me at "part language lesson", but then they throw in "affordable housing", "public broadcasting" and Cannes, and I'm like, WHOAH.

Man, I like them a lot. I didn't realize they were going to play Austin in a few months...with a sympony no less. You should come down with me and crash in my friend's "swank townhouse."

Yes @ Austin show! I am excited, and I might go. I live near Dallas, so it really isn't all that far! I could take a day off of work!

Oh man! It's weird you post about them today:

These guys were on NPR this afternoon, and it was the first time I had heard of them, too. I really liked their stuff, but it's this video that has me hooked! It deserves at least 3 viewings just to catch everything!

Something I would like to make, I think!

You are so much cooler now than you were yesterday.

I want Pink Martini to collectively bear my squirmy babies. If you're ever in Portland, I'll take you to a show.
